From Sweden to Manhattan: Why International Film Festival Recognition Still Matters

The Watchmaker’s selection for the 20th Manhattan Film Festival and subsequent win for Best Cinematography highlight both the opportunities and challenges facing independent filmmakers in today’s crowded entertainment landscape.
Every year, thousands of independent films compete for attention at festivals around the world.
For filmmakers, securing a place at a respected international festival is often one of the most important milestones in a project’s journey. It provides visibility, industry recognition, and an opportunity to connect with audiences beyond their home market.
This year, The Watchmaker was selected for the 20th Manhattan Film Festival in New York, one of the United States’ established independent film festivals. Following its selection, the film went on to receive the award for Best Cinematography, recognising the visual craftsmanship and creative vision behind the production.
For independent filmmakers, recognition at international festivals is rarely guaranteed. Competition is intense, and audiences today have access to more content than ever before through cinemas, streaming platforms, social media, and countless digital channels.
Yet despite the changing media landscape, film festivals continue to play an important role in discovering and celebrating new creative work.
Beyond awards and screenings, festivals provide a platform for filmmakers to showcase their work, build industry relationships, and gain exposure in an increasingly competitive global entertainment market.
The recognition received by The Watchmaker also highlights the importance of visual storytelling. Cinematography plays a central role in shaping how audiences experience a film, helping create atmosphere, emotion, and a distinct creative identity that stays with viewers long after the credits roll.
At PR Nordic, we have had the privilege of working with entertainment brands, filmmakers, publishers, creators, and cultural projects across the Nordic region for many years. One thing remains constant: great stories continue to resonate regardless of format, platform, or market.
The success of The Watchmaker at the Manhattan Film Festival serves as a reminder that strong creative work still finds its audience and that international recognition remains an important milestone for independent productions looking to make their mark on the global stage.
We would like to extend our congratulations to everyone involved in The Watchmaker, and especially to the talented team behind the film’s award-winning cinematography.
